Mercator’s projection is a cylindrical projection introduced in 1659, suitable for sea travel but inaccurate as a presentation of the globe as the Northern and Southern parts of the globe appear much enlarged.
The African Union is leading a campaign to replace Mercator’s projection with the Equal Earth projection. The petition aims to correct the historical distortion of Mercator’s map, which makes Africa appear the same size as Greenland, despite it being approximately fourteen times larger.
There are potentially an infinite number of projections which variously distort the the globe in an attempt to render three dimensions into two.
